What Is the Film About?
Gowtham and Yamini are going through a struggled marriage as the former is not his self. The reason is an ambition to become a writer is frustratingly getting difficult. He is slowly descending into madness, and Yamini cannot bear it.
In the process of depression, trouble and tension, Gowtham finds inspiration and comes up with a story. It under-currently highlights his sacrifice and also tries to highlight the women. The same process of reality and fiction continues with the relationship almost coming to an end in the ‘reality’. What happens when Gowtham and Yamini decide to split? Did it occur? Would Gowtham fulfil his dream of becoming a writer is what the movie is all about?
How Is Vijay Deverakonda’s Performance?
Vijay Deverkonda is terrific. That he is a unique presence in Telugu cinema is once again established by World Famous Lover. Like we said in our live updates, if not for him, it would have been very difficult to sit through the movie.
World Famous Lover shows three different shades from the actor. One of them happens to be the Arjun Reddy brooding type, which we have seen previously. The real surprise package is the Seenayya character, which shows an effortless and free-flowing side of the actor. The Telangana accent is a real plus here. The last one is the lighter vein cool-looking city slacker youth which is pulled off effortlessly by Vijay Deverakonda.
Unfortunately, the whole effort might go unnoticed given how the film has turned out eventually.
Direction by Kranthi Madhav?
Kranthi Madhav is a three-film old director whose first film came out in 2012. Among the three two are acclaimed ones, whereas one is successful. A crucial part of his success has been writing, which is hard-hitting and is present in old-school style. Even the failure, his last attempt, had left ideology as part of the narrative.
The point we are driving here is that ‘classical’ and ‘old-school’ presentation of the subjects despite their relevance or lack off to the present. In World Famous Lover, Kranthi Madhav again picks up such a theme and packages in a similar style. Although, technically, it is presented closer to the current trends.
World Famous Lover is about a male, who is married and unable to get what he wants out of life. He has made sacrifices, but it is not recognized. There are undercurrent pain and depression. All these are rolled into the character of Gowtham. And these points come out through the fictionalized stories. If one fails to see the connection, the whole exercise might come across narratively disjointed.
It is in getting the narrative consistency that Kranthi Madhav fails. The opening makes one curious regarding the character of Gowtham but does not connect with it. Why is he the way he is doesn’t come across? But, as mentioned previously, it has a link with the ‘fiction’ he wrote. This point is not well established, and that’s where the movie falters.
On its own, the fictionalized story is engaging with a lovely act as a pair by Vijay Deverakonda and Aishwarya Rajesh. The interval bang is alright even though predictable.
The second half follows the same pattern, but the narrative gets further away from the point. The love story too isn’t as engaging as the one in the first half, which also dampens the mood.
The core story, the reality, in the track of Gowtham and Yamini has nothing new to offer. However, as it is presented in parts, it creates a different impression. So, when an utterly predictable climax with a very routine end arrives, it seems odd, which shouldn’t have been the case given its real progress from the start.
Overall, World Famous Lover is a sincere attempt, with old-school beliefs and thoughts behind it. Still, good writing and engaging sequences would have created the magic. It doesn’t happen, and we have a disappointing product in the end.
Rashi Khanna, Catherine and Others?
Raashi Khanna gets the central character among all the female artists. She has been presented in a stylish avatar. But no amount of looks can cover the fact that she is inadequate when it comes to emoting. A lot of sequences require her to cry, and they all appear fake. Aishwarya Rajesh has a de-glamorous role and lesser run time. And yet she manages to impress. The other two ladies Catherine Tresa and Izabella Leite is wasted.
Apart from Vijay Deverakonda and the female leads, there are hardly any characters to speak off. Only Jaya Prakash and Priyadarshi come to mind, and they have nothing worth mentioning.
Music and Other Departments?
Gopi Sunder’s music is surprisingly lacklustre for a love story. The background score is marginally better, though. The cinematography is alright. The editing could have been better. The movie needs to be trimmed further to make it crisp. The writing is decent, but for a love story with this content, it required much more.
Basic Story Idea
Missing Magic And Emotional Connect
The second half could have been entirely revamped with a fresh set of thoughts, for both the fictional and real-world characters.
Did I Enjoy It?
