Charming Little Film
What is the film about? Pelli Choopulu Review Story Details
Pelli Choopulu is a simple tale about two individuals with diametrically opposite characters. While one is straightforward and wants to be an achiever, other is a lazy bum who is afraid to get what he wants and simply hopes to get on with his life by piggybacking on someone else. How one influences the other and brings change and finally gets together is what the film is all about. Pelli Choopulu Review Critic Take
How is the performance by Vijay Devarakonda?
Vijay is perfectly cast as the lazy bum, he suits the role to T and that is half the victory right there. All that he needs to do is not ruin what is given to him by trying to ‘act’, he just has to be himself and Vijay does it perfectly. There are no really big emotional scenes or scenes that require him to perform out of the skin. He is fine in his space and that is enough and impactful.
Direction by Tharun Bhascker? Pelli Choopulu Review Key Strenghts
Director Tharun Bhascker shot to fame with a short film that won him awards and laurels. So unlike others, he comes with a certain reputation. One must say after watching the film, he has lived up to it. The film clearly presents him as a director with good clarity of the medium.
Tharun has a very simple plot on hand and as we have seen it on numerous occasions, strong screenplay aided by performances can only save those films. Pellichoopulu has both and the magic can be seen despite the issues it has. The film is slow paced throughout but the first half feels extra slow as nothing really happens in terms of story movement. Whatever we see on screen is predictable and almost entirely is devoted to character development. What gets things going is the fresh way they have been presented and some really genuinely hilarious bits. The interval is very neatly done.
It is in the second half where the actual emotion lies and hence the slow pace doesn’t get that noticed. There are many scenes in this half that grab our attention even with all its predictability in place and emotions are rightly built to reach a crescendo in the climax. This proper build up with all the elements and actors in place of what makes the film work. Another major plus for the film is the locations which look ‘real’ on screen. This adds greatly to the proceedings even though at times the drama looks forced or fake in terms of acting. This, extracting of performances without giving fake vibes, is one aspect that the director needs to work on for his future films. Certain things can be passed off on short films but when it comes to big-screen viewing they stick out and spoil the fun.
Ritu Varma and others?
Ritu Varma is the heart and soul of the film. She is good in the role given to her which is that of a straightforward, speaking her own mind kind of girl. She has better screen presence than lead actor and the director has made good use of it too. Nandhu is fine in the small role given to him. Among the two friends character Kaushik gets better and better as movie progresses and is a hoot towards the end. Anish Kuruvilla is fine in his small part. Gururaj Manepalli gets a proper role after a very long time and he is fine in it. Others are equally well cast for their parts but their lack of experience does comes across many a times.
Music and other departments? Pelli Choopulu Review Technical Performance
Music by Vivek Sagar fits the mood of the film. There is nothing exceptional but it does the job. Cinematography is good and gives the film a rich vibe. Editing is neat. Dialogues are hilarious at times and overall they are good.
