KarthiWhat Is the Film About?
DSP Dheeraj (Karthi) is a sincere and ambitious cop who stops at nothing in catching criminals and serving justice. What’s the biggest case in his life and how it changes him is what the film is all about?

How Is Karthi’s Performance?
Karthi is superb in the role of a cop. He plays it in a textbook fashion going by how a sincere cop is to be portrayed. There are no special moments that stand out, but Karthi is highly efficient in carrying the role that requires little swag, and is mostly one dimensional with sincerity always plastered in the face.

Director VinothDirection by Vinoth?
Director H Vinoth made a very interesting debut with Sathuranga Vettai. There are some similarities between the debut and the second attempt, Khakee. The terrain with cons and deceit seems familiar. However, he gets an amped up production and a bigger budget to make a commercial film within his knowledgeable terrain.

The film has a good subject with lots of scope to thrill, but the director fails in presenting it in an engaging manner all the way. The problem is the narrative is riddled with inconsistency and its too lengthy. It jumps between extremely thrilling to boring within minutes. We get this jarring quality at the very beginning itself when the lead character takes his beginning police lessons which are sandwiched between the usual romantic tangle between the hero and heroine.

The interval and pre-interval are well done as we get to know about the mysterious killers. Post interval there are some thrilling moments, but once again, the narrative wobbles between interesting, boring, and confusing. Add to it, the film goes on and on, and on. The action moments sometime feels out of place as well. The climax is long and looses the impact by the time it’s done. It all looks awesome visually, but the impact is not entirely present. Overall, for the subject and terrific portrayal by Karthi, Khakee is a decent one time watch, if one doesn’t mind the length. Those who want things to be sharp and quick can forget about the movie.

Rakul Preet SinghRakul Preeth and Others?
Rakul Preet Singh is her usual self. She plays a typical naive hero loving girl, showing some sparks of brevity in a most predictable manner. Among the rest of the cast the gang stands out with Abhimanyu Singh making a menacing presence. The police officials are well suited with Bose Venkat standing out. Narra Srinivas tries to provide comic relief, but he is not entirely right in his portrayal.

Music Director GhibranMusic and Other Departments?
There are songs in the album but none of them are used in a commercial way breaking the narrative. Instead they are used in bits without disturbing the flow. In any case, they are just about alright. It is the background by Ghibran that stands out. The cinematography is apt for the subject and it enhances the overall feel. The editing is neat. Dialogues are okay.

Few Thrilling Scenes

Uneven Narration
Romantic Track

Narra Srinivas RaoAlternative Take
Since it is based on true incidents, an alternative take would be to present it in a police procedural manner rather than making it an out and out commercial film that is trying to be real.

Did I Enjoy It?
Yes in parts

Will You Recommend It?
Yes with slight reservation.

Preview: Khakee

‘Oopiri’ has changed the scenario for Karthi whose last best opener in Tollywood had been ‘Shakuni’ that came five years ago. In the recent past, Karthi was searching for a solo hero success and ‘Khakee‘ is arriving with decent expectations on 17th November.

‘Khakee’ had decent openings as post-Oopiri release but nowhere near his best ‘Shakuni’, till date. This is Karthi’s solo hero release after the lacklustre ‘Kashmora’ and thence the actor is searching for a solo success after ‘Naa Peru Shiva’ which was his last solo hero success movie.

Director H. Vinoth’s debut movie Sathuranga Vettai, an Indianized con movie received a lot of critical acclaim and hence, he dropped making the sequel to make this movie with Karthi. This is his second movie as a director and third movie as a writer.

One has to wait and see how Vinoth handled a star hero like Karthi as he had worked earlier with not so popular star cast in his debut movie. The trailer is quite impressive and there is big hope on Vinoth’s capabilities as a director.

The story of the film is said to be inspired by some true incidents that actually happened based on a newspaper article that came up in 2005 about the killings that happened from 1995 to 2005. So, the director had to do some research and meet real-life cops.

Talking about the music of the movie, when a music composer like Ghibran is composing the music of ‘Khakee’ one expects something intriguing and very interesting. The romantic numbers are soothing to our ears and even the item number is slow-paced folk-style.

Rakul Preet Singh with Karthi will be a fresh pairing. According to some reports, there is an intense love angle in this movie. The romantic songs featuring Karthi and Rakul said it all, anyway.

For Telugu audiences, this is the first cop movie of Karthi though this is his second cop movie for Kollywood audiences who had seen him as a cop in the Tamil remake of ‘Vikramarkudu’. Among this week’s releases, ‘Khakee’ is far ahead and has an edge over others as it is the only mass entertainer among them.

Let’s see how Karthi’s movie will be able to cash in this scenario. Wait for our unbiased Khakee review. Stay tuned.
