What is the film Jawaan about?
When Jai (Sai Dharam Tej) saves the Octopus weapon from falling into the wrong hands of Kesava (Prasanna), the later targets his family and promises to kill them one by one. How Jai (Sai Dharam Tej) saves the day with his intelligence is what the film is all about.
How is Sai Dharam Tej’s performance?
A new Sai Dharam Tej can be seen here. The hyper action is cut down, and it is no ruffian character that the actor usually does. It is a different experience for Sai Dharam Tej, no doubt, but at the same time, he doesn’t give any career breakthrough act here. It is strictly fine.
Direction By BVS Ravi?
BVS Ravi is known more as a writer than director. His first attempt at directing, a few years ago was disastrous. The second film Jawaan is definitely a tremendous improvement, but it still doesn’t make the cut.
Jawaan has an exciting premise, but the way it has been handled ruins it. There is a constant struggle to make a full-blown mass movie, and simultaneously to curb it and stick to the narrative, so that the film doesn’t come across a routine venture. The struggle can be seen on screen, and the result is a confused masala potboiler that is neither commercial enough to cover the flaws or intelligent enough to let one forget commercial necessities.
The first half of the film moves on predictable lines but has its share of engaging moments. There ‘routine commercial’ placements are the predictable ones with the songs being a dead giveaway. The interval mark does raise the interest.
The second half starts well but pretty soon runs out of steam. It gets repetitive after a point, and there are no real high points. There is one scene that stands out and makes the most favorable impression in this half only. The pre-climax is long drawn out without any punch. The climax is a disappointment. Jawaan is not a poor man’s Dhruva because if the attempt has been to make a similar film, the director has failed big time. Overall, Jawaan doesn’t offer the bang for the bucks, but it has few satisfactory moments and is not a total embarrassment like the last films of both the director and the hero.
Mehreen Kaur Pirzada and others?
Mehreen gets another filler sort of role. She only appears right before the songs and has nothing much to do. Prasanna is right in his role. He seems to enjoy playing it, and it shows onscreen. Kota Srinivas Rao in a short role makes his mark. Jayaprakash fits the father part perfectly. Even though Satyam Rajesh is present, he is not used for comedy. Subbaraju in a different outing is fine. The rest of the artists suit their parts well, but they have no big part to play.
Music and other departments?
If there is someone who has put heart and soul into the movie, then it is none other than SS Thaman. He lifts the film with his fantastic background score. The cinematography is alright. Editing should have been better. Dialogues are okay.
Removing the love track and making the movie an out and out genre flick. Remember the recent Garuda Vega, something on those lines with a different central conceit.
Did I enjoy it?
Will you recommend it?
With huge reservations

Jawaan US Premier live updates will begin at 4.30 AM IST
Sai Dharam Tej quickly settled as a hero who appeals to masses didn’t take much time to fall into the flops streak. Sai Dharam’s last three releases Thikka, Winner and Nakshatram didn’t work and now his next ‘Jawaan’ is up for release today. Initially, Jawaan was slated to come in August but pushed the release date few times yet the team has been successful in promoting the film to an extent without totally killing the buzz.
Jawaan is directed by one film old director BVS Ravi who faced a setback after the debacle of ‘Wanted’ with Gopichand needs to deliver, desperately.
Jawaan features Mehreen Pirzada, the latest lady fortune who is part of recent hit movies Mahanubhavudu and Raja The Great. Tamil actor Prasanna (actress Senha’s husband) plays a key role in the movie. Jawaan music scored by Thaman who is delivering decent BGM of late.
Will Jawaan bring back the success relief to hero Sai Dharam Tej? Will Jawaan set BVS Ravi as a director for future? Wait for our comprehensive Jawaan review, coming soon from Mirchi9 team.
US Premier collection: Jawaan has collected $45,224 K from 51 locations as of 9 PM EST.
