uber_rape_hyderabad_cabs_taxiAfter the inhuman tale of the rape of a 25 year old techie in the capital city of the country, the dialogue related to safety and the issues concerned is inevitable. The rape of the the techie by the Uber cab driver is posing many questions regarding the security of women. This kind of insecurity isn’t confined to one city in the country. Even Hyderabad techies and women have many tales to tell regarding the security lapses and lingering insecurity while using the cabs.

There are about 30 different cab services running across Hyderabad city. But now people are having doubts regarding the security system and are worried on the vulnerability factor while travelling in these cabs and especially during late hours in the evening. The issues which make women feel insecure travelling in these cabs are many.

The first being the condition of the cabs used. Many understand that run-down cabs are used which aren’t in good condition for security. The second reason is that they don’t have proper tracking mechanism and even if they have they can be easily manipulated and in control of the cab’s driver. The third one is, no back ground checks are done on the reputation & track record of the drivers hired by these agencies.

There are many scary tales which are submitted by the techies and other working women concerned about their security. To what extent would the precautionary measures like sending the cab’s number and cab servicing agency name to friends and family help the women from escaping from the scary episodes? Hence for women’s safety, the idea of SHE teams are shaping up in Hyderabad by Additional Commissioner Swathi Lakra.

This team has sent proposals to government that these SHE team cabs would be run by women for women. Besides setting up such exclusive women monitored and driven cabs, Swathi Lakra opines that it is essential that there should be an alarm button connecting from the cab to police. But as long as the mindset and the attitude of these men who attempt crime on vulnerable women doesn’t change, is it possible to ensure security to women?
