The much controversial Toddy business is not flourishing in Hyderabad as much as the government would want. TRS government has lifted the ban on Toddy compounds and planned to give 103 Licences to Toddy outlets in the city limits. However there are no takers for these license and so far only 56 of them are granted. Various factors are hindering the business in the capital.
The prime reason is the unavailability of land and high rentals. Many locals are hesitant to give their vicinity to these compounds on the complaints of nuisance. Also, the toddy rates in the capital are so high that people on the outskirts of the city are heading to the toddy outlets in Ranga Reddy district. The cost per bottle in Hyderabad is 25 Rupees while in Ranga Reddy it is just Rupees 10.
As the drink is being sourced from Nalgonda, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak and Warangal districts, the outlet owners are spending anywhere between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 5,000 for transporting a truckload of toddy. And this transportation expenses is adding up to the bottle rates. Also with the unavailabilty of toddy in the capital, there are doubts over the quality being supplied here.
