Supreme Says No to Reservations in Job PromotionsSupreme Court today delivered a historic verdict saying that there is no need for Reservations for SC and ST communities in Job Promotions. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Central Government, had strongly argued in favour of granting quota to SC and ST employees.

The court agreed with the other attorney who argued that there should not be a quota in promotions for higher services as the presumption of backwardness of SC and ST employees “vanishes” once they join government service. This judgment assumes significance in the rumours that Center is considering to push the Reservations in Job Promotions ahead of 2019 elections.

A 5-judge Constitution bench pronounced the unanimous judgment in the case and this judgment will mean that the government may have to give up the idea at least before 2019 elections. If it still wants to so that, it may push for the quota through a legislation after 2019 elections.
