With Chandrababu Naidu taking a strong resolution to curb the Red Sandal Smuggling menace, Andhra Pradesh Police is busy arresting loads of smugglers every day. In most cases the hired labourers present in several 10s of numbers were also being arrested. This arrests bring a strange problem to the police i.e., the acute shortage of handcuffs to bind them and produce in courts.
With no options left, Police are using twine ropes to tie them and present in courts. However this affair is often proving to be risky as the culprits trying to escape. This puts police on their toes every time.
Government provides every Police Station with half a dozen handcuffs but the ratio between availability of handcuffs and requirement would be 1:10 or even more. This problem is particularly high in Chittoor district where the Red Sandal Smuggling is at peaks.
