NRI Women DivorceAbout 2300 women were deserted and divorced by their NRI husbands, said Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan. Answering a question posed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha, Muraleedharan revealed the statistics.

He said that around 2372 complaints were lying with them from overseas women. All of them were abandoned in the last 5 years. In 2018, the government told the Parliament that they receive at least one distress call every 8 hours.

The government has placed various processes in place to address issues like domestic violence, harassment, and other matrimonial disputes faced by married NRI women. The external affairs ministry and the mission/ posts abroad regularly provide counseling, guidance, and information to help them handle financial and legal matters.

The Indian missions and posts conduct walk-in meets and open-house meetings. Online consular assistance is provided through MADAD, CPGRAMS, and social media. The Indian consulate, the minister said, also maintains a 24×7 helpline for emergency situations.
