Setback for Andhra Pradesh Govt in Supreme Over English Medium SchoolsIn what can be termed as another setback for Andhra Pradesh Government. The Supreme Court refused to issue a stay on the High Court’s order of stopping compulsory English medium in Government Schools. The court issued notices to the respondents and posted the next hearing to the 25th of this month.

The Government Counsel argued in the court that 94 percent of parents opted for English medium in the survey. Govt has to act according to their wishes. The Government sought a stay on the High Court’s order so that the English Medium can be started from this academic year itself. But the Apex Court refused.

The Government first announced the introduction of English Medium in Government schools without any basis. Later when the issue landed up in courts, it hurriedly claimed to have conducted a survey and said 94% of parents are preferring English Medium. So, there are doubts about the Government’s claims.

The issue would have resolved if the Government accepted the proposal to run Telugu and English medium schools simultaneously but Chief Minister Jagan is keen only on the English medium for reasons best known to himself. This academic year would have started already if not for the Coronavirus Pandemic.
