Minister-of-External-Affairs-S-JaishankarThe Union Minister of External Affairs of India, S Jaishankar announced that over 16 lakh Indians have renounced their citizenship since 2011.

Record 2,25,620 people have renounced their Indian citizenship in 2021 and this is the highest ever tally recorded in a single year.

The lowest tally was in 2020 when 85,256 people renounced their citizenship this year. This is the official data reported by the government.

In total, over 16 lakh people have denounced their Indian citizenship in the last 12 years which in itself is a staggering number.

With foreign immigration at a high, the renounce rate is at an all-time high.

The External Affairs Minister added that the number of Indians who had given up their Indian citizenship in 2015 was 1,31,489, while 1,41,603 people foresook it in 2016 and 1,33,049 in 2017.

In 2018, the number was 1,34,561, while 1,44,017 renounced their citizenship in 2019, 85,256 in 2020 and 1,63,370 in 2021.

The renounce rate is high now and it is expected to grow only bigger with the student visas and H-1B visa applicants spiking up.
