The controversial amendments to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act-2014 are approved by the Rajya Sabha. The bill was introduced by Home Minister Rajnath Singh. MPs of Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh strictly opposed the bill saying that Center has no right to change the boundaries of a state with out knowing the opinion of concerned state Assembly according to the Article 3. However with Congress and BJP supporting the bill, it was easily passed.

Unlike in Lok Sabha, there was a meaningful discussion on the bill in the upper house of the Parliament. And now the bill will be sent to the President of India for his approval which is usually just a formality. Up on President’s approval, the bill will become an act and the 7 submerging mandals of Bhadrachalam will be included in Andhra Pradesh then.

According to the amendment passed today, 7 mandals of Bhadrachalam division which gets submerged due to Polavaram project will be included in Andhra Pradesh. TRS is opposing the project saying that several Tribals will be displaced due to this project and demanding that those mandals should remain in Telangana. There are few sumerging villages in Odisha and Chatisgarh too. But BJD MPs from Odisha stated that they do not oppose the project.
