In the wake of the Omicron scare, state governments across the country have beefed up vigil at the Airports screening the passengers coming from ‘At-Risk’ countries. Sixty such passengers have arrived in Vishakapatnam from various airports in the last ten days.
The sixty also includes nine from South Africa. Thirty of them are in Vishakapatnam and the remaining have left to various places of the state. According to a report in TOI, thirty of them are not responding to the calls of the officials and are evading tests. The officials have alerted collectors of all districts to trace the missing foreign returnees.
The missing passengers are fearing institutional quarantine in case they are tested positive and so, are not responding to the calls. Meanwhile, Vishakapatnam officials say among those tested, no one is tested positive so far. India has reported two cases of Omicron variant from Bengaluru the other day.
These are the first cases of the variant in India. While one has a travel history to South Africa, the other does not have any.
