The Union External Affairs Ministry has given green signal for a regional passport office in Vijayawada, the next capital of Andhra Pradesh. The ministry officials have already started began the process to set up a full-fledged passport office in Vijayawada. However a Regional Passport Officer may not be appointed to Vijayawada until a new accommodation is granted to the new Passport office in the upcoming state capital.
In fact, there was a regional passport office in Vijayawada two decades ago but it was closed down and shifted to Vishakapatnam. There are currently two passport Seva Kendras in Vijayawada and Tirupati which operate under Vishakapatnam RPO. The new Regional passport office coming up in Vijayawada will operate independently. The ministry also started the delinking of all the offices in AP with Hyderabad Regional Passport office after the state division.
