The President of India has appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice S Abdul Nazeer has been appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. The incumbent Governor of Andhra Pradesh Biswa Bhusan Harichandan has been transferred to the Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Abdul Nazeer’s appointment has raised eyebrows. He retired only last month. He led the five-judge Constitution Bench that declared the November 8, 2016, demonetization decision didn’t suffer from any illegality even as Justice BV Nagarathna differed.
He is also part of the Bench that prevailed over the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid dispute. He is part of the unanimous verdict allowing the construction of Ram Mandir at the disputed place). The Government used politically the fact that a Muslim judge upheld the judgment which went against the Muslims.
Keeping that aside, Biswa Bhusan Harichandan is known for giving a completely free run to Jagan Government despite resorting to unconstitutional acts and deviations on many occasions.
We will have to see if the new Governor will be any different.
