Moved by the success of Godavari-Krishna river interlinking, the center proposed to interlink Krishna-Pennar-Cauvery rivers through a mega project. The responsibilities to prepare the Detailed Project Report(DPR) has been given to the AP government though the project partners Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharastra, Pondicherry and AP governments because of its recent completion first river interlinking of Godavari-Krishna in record number of 158 days by AP CM Chandra Babu Naidu administration.
The center envisages to divert the surplus 430 tmc ft of water from Mahanandi basin to Godavari river and then 925 tmc ft of water(including 430 tmc ft of water from Mahanandi) to the Krishna river via three links viz. Inchampalli-Nagarjunasgar, Inchampalli-Pulichintala and Polavaram-Vijayawada. Out of these 498 tmc ft of water to be diverted from Krishna to Pennar river via three links viz. Amatti-Pennar, Srisailam-Pennar and Nagarjunasagar-Somasila.
Of which 303 tmc ft water from Pennar would be diverted to Cauvery and there to further down water thrust south. This project would be completed in two steps. In first step Krishna-Pennar rivers will be interlinked followed by Pennar-Cauvery rivers. If completed, this would be the Mega interlinking project in the history of nation.
