PV Sindhu, the first Indian silver medal winner at the Rio Olympics this year, has credited her success to coach Pullela Gopichand, the husband of former badminton player PVV Lakshmi. In a recent interview, PVV Lakshmi spoke about her experiences as a badminton player who represented in the Atlanta Olympics.
Lakshmi’s exclusive interview with Mumbai Mirror has, however, caught attention for all the wrong reasons. The headline, which read ‘PV SINDHU HAS WHAT I DIDN’T HAVE – MY HUSBAND’, is the perfect example of how words can be taken out of context to mean something different. Lakshmi, who now assists her husband with the academy now, had stated that, “Sindhu has what I didn’t have back then – my husband as coach” which has been turned into an eye-catching headline.
Even twitter had several disagreeing posts to this headline. One tweet read “The reporter at Mumbai Mirror thought this was a Balaji show headline!” with captions like #Shame and #BadJournalism while another said “What an idiotic headline. You really should be shamed.”
