PV Sindhu won a Bronze medal the other day at the Tokyo Olympics. She has become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympics medals. She is the second sportsperson overall after Sushil Kumar to achieve the feat. She has made the country proud with this achievement.
Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi government seems to be trying credit for Sindhu’s success. “Sindhu’s performance in Olympics proves that Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is working well. Daughters have outdone others, even in Sports,” Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
If there is anything in this country for which the government does not even deserve an iota of credits, it is the sports. Government after government has neglected sports and did not make any attempt to provide the infrastructure to sportspersons. Whenever the sportspersons win a medal or trophy, politicians try to steal the credit.
One can wonder what Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao has got to do with PV Sindhu. In India, only the sportspersons and their coaches deserve the accolades of such achievements.
