She is proven guilty of defrauding businessman SR Maharaj of Rand 6.2 million. The businessman pressed criminal charges on her.

She was paid this amount which is 3.22 Crore in Indian Rupees for allegedly clearing import and Customs duties for a non-existent consignment from India. She informed the businessman that she is facing financial issues to clear the custom duties and was promised a share of profits.

She reportedly forged invoices and documents to convince investors that three containers of linen were being shipped in from India. Lata claims herself as “an activist with a focus on environmental, societal and political interests”. She was the founder and executive director of the Participative Development Initiative at the NGO International Centre for Non-Violence.
