LG Polymers Leak- Vizag May See A Surge in Cancer CasesAccording to a report in the Live Mint, Days after the Styrene Gas leak from LG Polymers plant in Vishakapatnam, The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Occupational Health (ICMR- NIOH), Ahmedabad has warned long-term effects among survivors in future, especially in children.

ICMR warned of the emergence of blood and lymphatic system-related cancers and therefore, called for long term follow-up of survivors, especially strict monitoring of all pregnant women. ICMR has written a letter to this extend to the Union health ministry and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The incident has claimed 12 lives and injured over 1,000. About 250 families were evacuated from the area. The State Government has come under attack for brushing its hands off the incident by announcing a huge compensation and there are no actions whatsoever on the industry.

Meanwhile, the committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal opined that the lapses by different managerial staff in maintaining pre and post operations led to this disaster.
