kohinoor awards in telanganaAfter the bifurcation of AP, one cannot expect all things to remain the same as earlier. Especially many names and titles would definitely find replacement with names associated with Telangana region. Likewise, even the State Awards given to the cine industry technicians and actors are going to change name and face of the emblem.

Earlier, the State Awards were given in the name of Nandi Awards. As Nandi is derived from the famous bull of ‘Mahanandi’ temple in Anantapur district, Telangana government want to discontinue the name and choose a different name which would be reflecting Telangana region’s sentiments.

Out of many names that came into consideration, Koh-i-Noor and ‘Kakatiya’ names seem to be favourites. Since ‘Kakatiya’ arch is already used in the State emblem, Koh-i-Noor has more chance. It is the name of a diamond that was mined during the Kakatiya reign. It was mined from the Kollur mines of Guntur and Krishna districts.

The final call on the re-christening of the State awards will be taken after a meeting of the senior functionaries of the government with the Telugu Film Industry Director’s Association. Anyway, the name change is going to happen for Telangana State Awards, while AP may continue using ‘Nandi’ awards.
