The famous poll promise of giving away free 2BHK houses for poor may not be free now. The beneficiaries will have to at least pay one Lakh per house now. The cost of these houses were initially estimated at 3.5 Lakhs per house. However the cost has gone up to 4.5 Lakhs now and the cash strapped government is planning to charge this extra one lakh from the beneficiaries.
Also this free housing scheme may not begin in near future for two reasons. The state government wants to complete the ongoing probe on irregularities in ‘Indiramma Illu’ scheme during the previous Congress regime before introducing this new scheme.
Also the state government is looking to implement this scheme in association with Central government’s new housing scheme. The housing scheme in Telangana is delayed until the modalities of the central scheme is finalized.
