Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao previously tried to demolish Government Chest Hospital at Erragadda to make way for a new Secretariat but that could not happen. Now the state government is eyeing to demolish another heritage structure, the Mint Compound Building. It is currently being used by the Central Power Distribution Company.
The government is in the process of taking over of the building for construction of three or four blocks of the new Secretariat. This is because a temple and a mosque on the Secretariat premises are hindering the plans for new buildings. Government is planning to make use of Mint Compound.
Telangana government is planning to build about 10 lakh square feet of space in three or four blocks that will be built after demolishing the current A, B and C blocks of the Secretariat. The government is planning to use Mint Compound for parking and other amenities. Government also wants AP government to vacate its H and L Blocks to make sure the construction begins from August as planned. Telangana employees will be accomodated in those buildings along with several other government buildings in Hyderabad.
