why-jayalalithaa-was-buried-not-crematedFuneral of Honorable Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who passed away last night , has been done at MGR memorial near Marina beach. Though she was an Iyengar and had practiced Hinduism, she was buried instead of cemented. Most of the late Dravidian leaders were buried irrespective of their origin as Dravidians practiced atheism.

But Amma, she used to practice Brahmin rituals and used to pray as a believer. Then why was she buried not cemented as per Hindu rituals? Reports say that the reason behind it was that all the main Dravidian leaders like Annadurai, Periyar and MGR were buried and hence followed the same for the funeral Jayalalithaa who was one of the most influential leaders of AIADMK. Another reason was that cremation needs a blood relation to perform the rituals of cremation as per Hinduism, where Jayalalithaa do not have any family. There is one blood relative though, the daughter of her late brother, but Sasikala who was taking care of Amma’s final procedures, didn’t want the relative to be involved in the same due to the fear of a potential challenge.

One-day State mourning was declared by the government. About 10 lakh people have been to the Marina beach to have a final sight of their beloved leader. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, other ministers, and other leaders have attended the funeral of the Iron lady.
