Indian Student Stabbed 11 Times In 'Racial Attack' in SydneyShubham Garg, a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering student from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, was stabbed 11 times by a man who allegedly demanded cash. The incident took place on October 6 at about 10.30 pm as Shubham walked along the Pacific Highway.

Daniel Norwood (27) was arrested at the scene and was taken into custody by the North Shore Police Area Command detectives. Norwood has been charged with “one count of attempted murder”. He stabbed Shubham 11 times in the face, chest, and abdomen.

Shubham’s family confirmed that neither Shubham nor his friends knew the attacker personally. His father first alleged that it was a racial attack but the police confirmed that it was not the case.

Shubham is hospitalized and it is being reported that the officials from the High Commission as well as the consulate are in touch with him and with his family members in India.

Shubham has a Bachelor’s degree in Technology and a Master of Science degree from IIT Madras.

The family is trying to get a visa to travel to Australia but they have not been able to secure it.
