Amid High Court’s final warning to come up with GHMC schedule, Telangana government is making brisk moves to split the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Earlier they have planned to break the GHMC in three but now are sticking to two – Hyderabad and Secunderabad municipal corporations.
Each Corporation will have 100 wards each which will be chalked out from the existing 150 wards of GHMC. The ruling TRS party hopes that the division will help the party to capture the city, an uphill task in the civic body’s current form. TRS party is working on political calculations which will help it in the upcoming polls.
However it has to be seen if the High court allows the government to go on this ideas as it requires at least 250 days for conducting elections as it involves several procedures and approvals such as delimitation and reservation of wards, enumeration of BC voters and drafting electoral rolls. Experts believe it is less likely that the high court will give such long time to the government.
