Vijayawada-Airport-internationalThe renovation and expansion works of the existing terminal at Gannavaram Airport is going on at brisk pace and the works will be completed in two months. After these works, the airport will be ready to handle international flights after that. Union Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapathi Raju is taking special interest on the airport which will help the development in the upcoming capital region of the state immensely.

The existing 1,100 square metres passenger terminal will be upgraded to 3,200 square metres and new parking base for 14 planes is being added including the existing parking base for two flights. Airports Authority of India is contemplating adding of facilities like vehicle parking for passengers and cabs, ATM centers, space for customs and immigration officials (if approved for government) and currency exchange facilities.

Airports Authority of India is sitting on a report for clearance on international operations during the night. After that, Central government will have to clear the proposal. The passengers floating in the airport has gone up to 40000 to 45000 per month in recent times, till September, the airport used to have 9,000 to 10,000 passengers per month till September.
