Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had announced phase-wise Liquor Prohibition by the next elections. The State Government claims to have decreased the number of Liquor shops by 33% and also increased the prices so as to dissuade the people from drinking.
The Government recently decreased the rates bringing doubts on earlier claims. But even after that, there is no effect on the income of the Government. In August 2019, the Government has got 1747.29 Crore as income from liquor sales and in August this year, the Government managed 1635.07 Crore.
In September 2019, the state has got 1205.39 Crore as Liquor income. In the first 24 days of this month, the state already got 1461.8 Crore income which means already 21.27% more. This is despite the fact that the Corona effect impacted several people and their incomes.
Andhra Pradesh is ranked Sixth in the states with the highest Liquor Revenues. Neighboring Telangana is in the fifth position. It is doubtful if the Government can let go of this income in the name of Prohitibion especially as the state is under severe financial stress.
