student-polls-ban-india

Way back in 1988, a brutal murder of ex-Nizam College student leader Devender Yadav in the issue of college politics forced the then state government to ban all the student polls. Since then no students’ union polls were held in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Subsequent government never entertained the idea of resuming them for various reasons. In the wake of state division and formation of new governments, Student Unions have demanding the lifting of the 25 year old ban in the state universities.

They say these elections will help inculcate leadership qualities in students and will also give future leaders to the state. The demand is particularly high in the Telangana Universities where student politics is more intense. On the other side there are also apprehensions that these student level politics will increase groupism and deviate students from studies and take them in wrong route for politics and elections. AP Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu is not at all in favour of lifting the ban while Telangana CM KCR who worked with the students during the agitation days is slightly in favour to this demand.
