The Union Water Resources Ministry has supported Andhra Pradesh in Supreme Court in the case filed by Odisha Government against the Polavaram Project. AP Government argued that the case is not eligible to be taken up by the court and the Central Government supported it.
The Union Water Resources Ministry also informed the court that all the states should abide by the Godavari Tribunal Award and these objections should not be entertained. Odisha is objecting to this project as it submerges many villages in the state.
On the other side, Telangana Government also implied in this case and informed the court that the project may submerge Bhadrachalam and Singareni Mines. The State Demanded that its concerns should be thoroughly examined by experts.
Polavaram Multi-Purpose Irrigation Project comes with a total capacity of 194 TMC which will irrigate about Five Lakh Acres over Two Crops Every year. The Project will also generate 960MW of Hydel Power which is the cheapest available power in the market right now. Hence the project is said to be very beneficial for the state and is treated as the ‘Life Line’.
