Can Jagan Get NV Ramana ImpeachedAndhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy seems to be targeting Supreme Court Judge, Justice NV Ramana who is tipped to be the next Chief Justice of India. He wrote a long letter to the current Chief Justice making allegations on Ramana.

He alleged that Ramana at the behest of Chandrababu Naidu is attempting to destabilize and topple the democratically elected government by influencing the rooster of judges in Andhra Pradesh High Court. Jagan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah last week.

So, YSR Congress Supporters are assuming that the Chief Minister has the Central Government’s co-operation and Ramana will be impeached. What is the process to impeach a judge of the Supreme Court or any High Court? The Parliament can do that, legal experts say.

At least 100 MPs from Loksabha and 50 MPs from Rajyasabha are needed to initiate motion in Both houses. It will be the prerogative of the Lok Sabha Speaker or Rajya Sabha Chairman to accept it or not. If they do not accept, the motion is dropped. Even if they accept, the first step would be to appoint a three-member committee to investigate allegations who are former Judges, Former CJI, and Jurists.

If the allegations are untrue or not proven, the motion will be dropped. If proven, the motion will be placed in the Parliament with their findings, Both the houses should pass the motion with two-thirds attending the session and the majority voting in favor of the impeachment. History is not on Jagan’s side in this issue. Not a single High Court or Supreme Court was impeached in the history of Independent India.
