A bride from Katna village in Murshidabad sought divorce just two weeks after her marriage because her husband has erectile dysfunction. She even demanded her in-laws to return Rs 55,000 cash and assets worth Rs 55,000, which she brought as dowry. The 18 year old girl fought the case through Shabnam Ramaswami, founder of an NGO called Street Survivors India.
After a series of meetings, the girl won the case on Saturday. This is the first such divorce case from rural India on the grounds of husband’s impotence. The girl also said that she is pressing the divorce early so that she is not branded as infertile which will complicate the divorce process and her future.
The girl reportedly realized that her husband has erectile dysfunction on the wedding night itself. Initially she feared talking about it but finally broke out before her family. The man’s family duly returned the money she got and will be returning the money in lieu of assets once the paper work of the divorce is complete.
