The Metro Rail Project for Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri region is one of the promises of the Center to Andhra Pradesh during the state division. Center promised to complete the project in four phase across the 300 Kms stretch. However experts are expressing their concerns over the economic feasibility over this project since it only cover 30 Lakhs of population and are demanding the government to include more areas to the proposed network.

VGTM-UDA already began a detailed project report study and is going to spend about Rs 25 crore for it. The first phase is expected to cover the area between Gannavaram and Gollapudi. The daily traffic between Guntur and Vijayawada, Guntur-Tenali and Tenali-Vijayawada in buses will be around 26000 per day but a metro train project will be economically viable only if the passenger traffic is about 50,000 daily.

Experts also say that no metro train in the country has a total length of more than 200 km. However government sources say Metro Rail is needed keeping in the view of the coming state capital as the population density in the region will increase by several folds. It will also be better to complete the project at this stage as Center will have to fund the entire project.
