central jail in amaravatiA new central jail will come up in 24 acres of land in Amaravati, the upcoming capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The state already have central jails at Rajahmundry,Visakhapatnam, Kadapa and Nellore. Prisons department had sought 150 acres in Mangalagiri.

The state government is yet to take a final call on the location but made it clear that it can not allocate such huge chunk of land. The state government reportedly is offering only 24 acres for the jail.

Besides building new jails, infrastructure is also being developed in the existing central jails in the state. Manufacturing units of prisoners’ uniform are being setup in Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry jails at cost of 50 Lakhs.
