Over 500 people were hospitalized and one dead with symptoms like epilepsy and vomiting. For about four days, the medical experts and the Government could not find the root cause of the problem and the media started referring it to a mystery disease.
A team of AIIMS doctors is in Eluru and their preliminary findings say Water pollution is the cause of illness in Eluru. Metals like Lead and Nickel in water, are contaminants. Industrial waste or water pollution may have caused their addition to the water bodies.
Most of the victims suffered from neurological problems. More samples were collected and sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The officials are also conducting samples of pulses, salt, milk, water, and vegetables from the houses of patients to ascertain the source of the contaminants.
A team of World Health Organization (WHO) is also going to arrive in Eluru to take stock of the situation.
