The popular and hot anchor of Telugu television, Rashmi Gautam, got herself entangled in a messy face-off on Twitter after she posted a comment opposing the violence involved in cock fights and asked people to grow up and stop the inane fights.
Goes without saying, she had a deluge of comments wherein others commented that had she made a similar comment on Jallikattu, she would have been strewn apart by Tamil trollers.
It is that time of the year when men bet heavily on cock fights and families travel from cities to places where the cock fights are held on a grand scale. Though it has been a long-held tradition, of late, the cock fights are being opposed by animal lovers and have been creating a whole lot of controversy.
It can be recalled that an attempt to ban Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu became a huge issue and finally the state government had to bow down to people’s wish to continue the tradition. While Jallikattu is about bulls, cock fights are as the name goes between two cocks that are trained for the game.
Though there is rising awareness about the brutal fights that lead to heavy bleeding or sometimes death of the cocks, a popular belief is that it is a custom that has been carried forward for ages and hence needs to be continued for future generations.
