The year 2012 has not been very fortunate for the Tamil dubbed films. Of all such films produced, only Kanchana has been successful leading to a loss of more than Rs 130 crores by nearly 40 Telugu producers in 85-odd dubbed films.

Prasanna Kumar, secretary of the Producers’ Guild, meanwhile, attributes the cause of this disaster to the upswing of Telugu cinema, “The resurgence of new-age Telugu cinema and simultaneous downfall of dubbed movies doesn’t seem to be mere coincidence.” Director Teja on the other hand believes that “With a big chunk of money coming from AP region, Tamil producers started to add grandeur to their films, but watered down their plots. This is in complete contrast to their earlier winning formula of refreshing themes in limited budgets,” says director Teja.
