‘Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ (“Aakasam Nee Haddura’ in Telugu) won critical reception and also a blockbuster on OTT when it was directly released on Amazon Prime and that could have fared even better if it went for a theatrical release.
Suriya’s movie was submitted for Oscar nominations scrutiny and everyone thought that it made it to the Oscar nominations by itself. However, the latest reports say that the movie made it to the scrutiny of the nominations through paid service.
‘Soorarai Pottru’ was said to have used Academy Screening Submission and through this filmmakers across the globe can submit their movies through a subscription fee plus watermarking cost and the former alone was said to have cost $ 12,500.
The official entry for Oscars from India was already selected and it’s Malayalam movie ‘Jallikattu’ nominated for Best International Feature Film Category. ‘Soorarai Potru’ has to ass several rounds before making it to the nominations list.
