jokes ban india supreme courtThe famous Santa Banta Jokes are now under Supreme Court’s radar after the apex agreed to take up a PIL which seeks a ban on jokes on Sikhs and Sardars. The complainant claims that these jokes violate the right of equality, the constitution has given and is also an attack on the community’s dignity.

The petitioner asked the court to ensure immediate take down of such jokes on internet. The petitioner, a Sikh lawyer Harvinder Chowdhury also sought the court to direct the offenders to deposit a compensation in the National Legal Aid.

The apex court adjourned the case hearing for a month after the petitioner promised to come up with more case laws and other material to support her plea of ban on those jokes. Supreme court is likely to take opinion of experts to ascertain if the jokes aim at denigrating people
