Samantha pinned a lot of her hopes on her latest theatrical outing, Shaakuntalam, a mythological love epic. The film had its theatrical release on the 14th of April.
The film has now opened on a disastrous note at the box office with an agonisingly low box office tally.
The film has failed to even touch the double digit gross mark at the box office. This goes down as one of the epic failure opening weekend tallies for a supposed big budget film in recent times.
The USA collections are at a shade over $250K which is again another poor tally for a Samantha starrer as her previous medium budget film alone did over $500K.
The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 80 crores, as claimed by the makers and if that really is the case, then it would mean Shakuntalam is one of the costliest failures in recent times.
Samantha’s hopes of joining the big league for female-oriented films have evaporated rather quickly with Shakuntalam turning out to be the costliest failure in her career, and also in the Indian film industry.
