A thunderbolt has struck the Telugu film industry out of nowhere. SS Rajamouli’s RRR has got postponed indefinitely as several states in the country are going for restrictions.
This comes as a shock after the team has extensively promoted the film across the length and breadth of the film. The decision has come as a total surprise because only yesterday the team ended talks with the distributors regarding rate cuts due to the AP issue and also released a song, #RiseOfRam from the film.
While that has happened, it will be interesting to see what will be in store for the industry and the film going forward. RRR postponement also brings doubts about the release of another Pan-India film, Radhe Shyam.
Bangarraju will join the race. Acharya and Bheemla Nayak would love to. But we are told that both the films have works pending and may not make it for Sankranthi. If no biggie releases for Sankranthi, the trade will be demoralized big time.
If the restrictions come to the Telugu States as well, everything is going to be a gone case. Now, we will come to what lies for RRR from now. Ideally, the movie can now arrive only for Summer. That complicates a lot of things. RRR team has got the best possible date for Sankranthi in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Films like Bheemla Nayak and Gangubai Kathiawadi have made way for RRR. It has also got two weeks of breathing space. It is very difficult to get a favorable date in all languages in Summer. Assuming Omicron threat is going by then, Summer is likely to be the first big season. It is unlikely that every industry will co-operate.
Also expecting such a sacrifice in a big season like Summer is too big. Sankranthi is not a big season for the North. And then, the other question is if the team can get this momentum once again.
Besides money going to waste, it is not easy to promote the film once again so aggressively. We have been hearing speculations about a possible OTT release. But realistically it looks like the most unreal option.
The road ahead looks tough. A film of this magnitude and Telugu pride definitely deserves better.
