Some of the states in the country including major states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, etc have imposed a Night curfew to counter the Omicron scare. There are speculations as a result that RRR may get postponed at the last minute.
Some think the movie can release on OTT with the Pay Per View model. The movie has to recover 300 Crore from its theatrical run which is the same amount it should recover from the OTT PPV mode. If the movie is priced at 500 Rupees per view, the movie should have 6 Crore subscriptions to break even.
Amazon Prime Video and Netflix do not have the Pay Per View model in India so far. Zee5 explored that model already but its total paid subscribers are just around four to five million. Mind you these are Premium customers but not PPV customers. Amazon Prime Video has 1.8 Crore subscribers.
So even if we consider, the movie will get new subscribers many times more than the original count, it does not look possible. Baahubali 2 has garnered 10 Crore footfalls making it one of the best of all time. Furthermore, the penetration of OTTs in India is not even a fraction of what theaters have.
So, these are all complex things. As things stand today, except for a Nationwide Lockdown, nothing can stop RRR from releasing on January 7th, 2022. The team had gone so far in the promotions already even to think of a postponement. Also, most of the promotional content is already out and a postponement will mean they fall of content for the next round of promotions.
