The announcement that everyone has been waiting for is here now. The box office monster, mega awaited RRR release date is locked. Director SS Rajamouli announced that it would hit cinemas all over on January 7th, 2022.
Ideally, for a biggie, January 7th is a perfect date. It gives an open week on release, and then it gets the advantage of holidays in the second week. However, when it comes to RRR, it is a risk. It is in addition to the pre-festival effect, which will be more for Sankranthi. Rajamouli is very well aware of it and still has gone ahead, suggesting confidence in the product.
Coming to why the release date is risky, well, it is because of the pan-India nature of RRR. The SS Rajamouli directorial will face competition from biggies in multiple languages now. It starts from Hindi itself, where only a few days ago, Gangubai Kathaiwadi was announced. It stars Alia Bhatt in the lead, who also plays a crucial role in RRR.
In Telugu and also in Hindi, RRR will face significant issues with Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam. It arrives on January 14th, a week after RRR. In Tamil, there is Ajith’s Valimai for the Pongal festival.
It means, not only does RRR faces competition, but it loses the screens in the all-important festival (second) week. In Telugu, it is fine, as there will be additional star power from Jr NTR and Ram Charan. However, they hold no such ‘power’ in other languages. It will all be about the content power of RRR, then.
