Two big movies that went for a direct release on OTT platforms bring forth the situation where they have saved from flop tag. If they would have waited for a theatrical release, they wouldn’t have sustained in the competition.
Let’s take the case of Jyothika’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ that got an average talk on Amazon Prime. If the movie would have gone for theatres first, it would have been a sure shot flop amidst competition. The second case is the Bollywood movie ‘Gulabo Sitabo’.
Trade pundits speculate that the movie would have been a flop and have minted Rs. 35-40 crores only, but the makers avoided the FLOP tag by releasing on an OTT platform and also minted good profits because of the star cast, especially, Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushman Khurrana.
So, more movies may follow the route if the makers lack confidence in their content. However, without big names attached to the movie, it’s not easy to get a good price from the OTT partners.
