Organ donation Schemes benefiting only the rich!Jeevandhan, the organ donation and transplantation scheme run in both the Telugu states is acquiring the bad name of being a scheme for the rich. It is alleged that the organs obtained through the donors are only reaching the rich as the transplantation surgeries are too costly and are being performed only in the corporate hospitals.

The private hospitals are charging as much as 30 Lakhs and more for any transplantation surgeries. Tis makes the scheme not within the reach of the common man. For an instance there are as many as 162 Liver Transplants performed in Hyderabad since 2013. Of these, only three beneficiaries were from the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, that too courtesy Rs 10.5 lakh each from the CM’s relief fund.

Government hospitals blame that all the harvested livers under Jeevandan are cornered by corporate hospitals for patients who can shell out Rs 30-50 lakh. Many government hospitals have patients of BPL category waiting endlessly for a transplant.
