Recently the news came in that the Tamil Nadu government had sought a probe on celebrity couple Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara regarding the surrogacy row. The latest reports say that the couple has submitted the necessary documents to the inquiry committee.
On October 9, the much-celebrated couple announced the arrival of their twin boys, reportedly through surrogacy. Questions were raised if the couple abided by all the rules enforced by the surrogacy laws of the country.
In an affidavit given to the TN health department, the couple has clarified that though they tied the knot ceremony in June this year, their marriage was registered six years ago in 2016. They also added that they had signed the surrogacy contract in December 2021
According to Indian surrogacy laws, a couple is deemed ‘eligible’ for surrogacy if they have been married for at least five years. The age of the wife must be between 25 and 50 years and the husband should be between 26 and 55 years. Additionally, the couple must not have any living child biological or adopted.
As per the law, a surrogate mother must be a relative of the couple, a married woman aged between 25 and 35 years, with a child of her own, and who has been a surrogate only once in her life.
Reports suggest that the couple is likely to be given a clean chit as the newly passed act in 2021 would not affect them.
