Multiplex Association Asks Entire Film Industry To Honour Theatrical Tradition We have previously seen the issue arise between the theatre association, distributors and producers in Tamil cinema. Now, nationally, The Multiplex Association Of India (MAI) has written an open letter requesting all producers, big and small, across India to hold their releases.

With an increasing buzz of producers, especially the smaller and medium budget ones opting for digital release, the Multiplex Association Of India has come up with a request. It is asking everyone to honour the long-existing trend of the window between the theatrical arrival and OTT debut.

The collective social experience of watching cinemas on the big screens should be preserved MAI said. It also added that the increasing pent up demand for movies will see a collective raise in the revival of the entertainment industry if everybody is together in understanding the importance f the preservation of the tradition of movie-going.

The talk of biggies like Laxmi Bomb, Master, Nishabdham, Aranya and many other low to medium budget films have led to this open letter. The response is awaited.

The situation is not just restricted to the Indian multiplexes, though. Recently, the same issue surfaced in Hollywood when a large theatrical chain (AMC) threatened to ban a top studio (Universal) over the latter’s claims of changing movie-watching habits. Just the mere hint of not going to cinemas has seen dire consequences.
