Salman Rushdie’s Midnight Children is a deep, intense story of Saleem Sinai, a boy born who was born at midnight on August 15 of 1947, just on the brink of independence. Deepa Mehta, who rose to fame with 1947: Earth has tried to incarnate this amazing story into a cinematic version in an engaging and entertaining way.
Although the cast of the movie has been mostly praised, with Debutant Satya Bhabha playing the key role of Saleem, and Siddharth playing the role of Shiva, nemesis of Saleem and Shriya Saran as the luminous, Soha Ali Khan appears to be sadly miscast as Saleem’s sister Jamila.
With Giles Nuttgens’s lavish cinematography and Nitin Sawhney’s outstanding score, as well as Mehta’s direction, the film is expected to garner great attention in the South Asia. However, as far as its showing in West is concerned, the reviews were not up to par.
