Sridevi’s big return to the silver screen while highly awaited and eagerly anticipated did not live up to its hype. While the movie received high praises both in India and abroad, when it comes to its reception at the box office, it fell flat. According to the trade reports, the opening of English Vinglish on a Friday night earned only a sum of Rs. 2.5 crore, with some theatres going housefull while others remaining empty. However the following days showed a definite rise in the scores, with the earnings standing on 4.4 and 6.1 crores respectively on Saturday and Sunday.

It appears that even as Sridevi charmed the industrialists and critics alike with her performance, she failed to sway her audience, thus the movies weak reception at the box office. It still remains to be seen what this Friday’s release – Rani Mukerji’s wakda comic caper Aiyyaa might do to English Vinglish’s further business. But more on that later!
