2022 has been a great year for Tamil cinema. Though there have been misfires like Beast and Valimai, the blockbuster success of Vikram and Ponniyin Selvan – 1 have breathed new life and vigor into the Tamil industry.
The success of these two films also marked the comeback of two of the biggest living legends of Kollywood, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam.
Kamal Haasan was suffering from a low phase for a very long time. His last hit film was in 2013, Vishwaroopam. But he has bounced back like a phoenix this year with Vikram which has become a blockbuster all thanks to young and dynamic director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Kamal’s shelved film Indian 2 has been also revived to cash in on the success of Vikram.
Mani Ratnam has also been delivering disasters over the past many years. His films like Cheliya, Kadali, and Raavan didn’t recover even 50% of their investments. A lot was riding on Ponniyin Selvan including Mani Ratnam’s future as a director.
But the film has smashed all the records for a Tamil film this year and the trade expects it to surpass Vikram and emerge the biggest Tamil grosser of the year. The film has grossed around 250 crores worldwide till now.
It will be interesting to see how these both legends will use these great comebacks and deliver some solid films in the future.
